Card Archetypes

The Gem Knights are one such example!

After my rediscovered appreciation of Yu-Gi-Oh recently I have come to respect the trading card genre of gaming much more now. One of these new factors that has helped my appreciation of this fascinating sector of the gaming world is the idea of Trading Card Archetypes.

To those that aren’t familiar Archetypes are essentially groups of cards that are placed together in a type of theme that also act as sets. They can have things such as shared art designs, gameplay mechanics and other such things. It helps to make cards distinct while also keeping them in a playable format that you can build a deck around. In Yu-Gi-Oh several examples of these include Cyber Dragons, Ancient Gears or Gem Knights. I find it fascinating that despite the fact that these are just bits of cardboard that they are capable of building up a fanbase around certain types of them or even define whole parts of the game.

For those of you that still play card games what do you think? Do you find this also fascinating or do you see it as simply another game mechanic? Feel free to tell me your own thoughts about this! That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
