Steam has had a data leak, and it may be the biggest data leak in the history of gaming, beating out even the massive Nintendo leak that happened not too long ago. Not only did this data leak contain loads of stuff from Valve, including betas of Portal 2 and TF2 maps, but it also had a bunch of third party files and betas from games just simply released on the Steam platform such as those from Mafia 2 and Spec Ops: The Line.
Now normally a big data leak like this gives plenty of things for dataminers and those interested in beta or cut content to pour over and that usually is the end of it. However, because this contains files not just from Valve but various other companies this may end up being a bigger deal as many companies may choose to take legal action against Valve for allowing this to happen. Hopefully not so, as it’s not like Valve intentionally released these files, but still I could certainly see this spiralling into a bigger issue than it currently is. For now however, keep an eye out on how this story develops, it may change things for the future of the platform.
