Did you know that the Wii is almost 20 years old now? That’s the same age as some of the first ever video games were in the mid 2000’s that we considered ‘Retro’ and now, well, I guess are now ancient by comparison.
Recently a show in Japan known as Automaton Media held a poll with its watchers on whether the Wii and PS3 (and by extension the Xbox 360) should be considered Retro consoles now, and thus would be viable for a certain segment on their show. The results? 80% said yes, and they’re not exactly wrong, even if I don’t want to admit it.
The Wii in particular is fascinating as to me it defined to me the transition period from consoles being kid toys that were played by the majority of people with younger thinking minds to gaming being an all-inclusive hobby that all ages and demographics could enjoy. It was essentially the point at which the old way of thinking about games went away, and paved the way forward to the future of the technology and innovative gameplay alike. It even helped birth the Frutiger Aero visual style, which I guess is also retro now? Oh god make it stop just typing this is hurting my bones.
Alas, I defer to you great viewer. Are the seventh generation consoles retro now? If so, what’s your favourite ‘retro’ game on them? My favourite retro game is Halo 3! …dear god. That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
