The Cute Factor

Look at those cute polygons!

After trying out the lovely if short Grimm’s Hollow I’ve gained a brand new appreciation for games that aim to be cute above all things. As a self respecting manly man (of course I’m not) I love cute things and especially when they are in my video games. There is something about the charm of a game if it aims to make me smile with cuteness that I feel a lot of the industry has forgotten about recently.

The biggest example of this kind of style is almost certainly the Animal Crossing series which when combined with the relaxing gameplay and stress-free design and usability you can imagine that the style of the game works in tandem to make them game an even more enjoyable experience. This type of ability to combine the art style and the gameplay into something memorable and, most importantly, distinct is something that I feel a lot of games would benefit from focusing on more.

Still it’s not to say that grittyness and other such style don’t have their place, far from it in fact. It’s just that sometimes rather than watching an interesting documentary about wars or conspiracies I would rather binge a bunch of cute kitten videos, and there is nothing wrong with that.

So I’m interested, what games have you all played which had a cute art style that really resonated with you? Let us all know! That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
