If you aren’t aware SteamDB is the biggest and most interesting database of information for Steam Games, updates and all around interesting data and changes that happen on the biggest PC game platform in the world. It, shockingly, has also been run by exclusively one person, xPaw, who after years of running the site has decided enough is enough and they have burnt out from trying to keep this ship running whilst everything got worse around them. As such, the site has now been sold to NexusMods, the biggest game modding site, an interesting choice.
Whilst the new owners claim that this purchase will allow them and users to better understand how updates may break mods and gather data on what would be best to host on the site more people see this for what it really is, a chance to make money off the platform. NexusMods haven’t been shy about saying this either, noting that ‘SteamDB needs to make money’ and whilst they claim nothing about the site at present will be taken away to make profits we don’t know how that will shape in the future. It could be that important updates or new features become subscription exclusive, or something like that, which completely goes against what SteamDB was meant to represent, free access to data and information for all.
A lot of doom and gloom at present, however for now we just don’t know how it will pan out and we’ll just have to wait and see if things get messed up for profits down the line. God I hope they don’t. That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
