In an interesting twist it seems as though Microsoft may be gearing up to potentially create a handheld that would rival that of the Steam Deck. This is mainly fuelled by rumours sparked by the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, during recent interviews stating that they would love to have a handheld console and think it’s a good idea, along with some leaked documentation suggesting this to actually be a thing.
It’s an interesting idea as the Steam Deck famously runs off Linux and thus naturally an Xbox-equivalent would most likely run off a Windows-based system and thus might have better compatibility with third party applications. It also most likely would have the Xbox Game Pass built in and so would enable a real incentive to use it as there would be a large amount of games you could play on it just by paying a subscription.
What do I think on the matter? I think it would also be a good idea, competition breeds innovation after all, and depending on the specs this could be a real rival to Valve’s excellent handheld. The future may be less in dedicated games consoles and more surrounding PC gaming and handheld devices, though it is strange that if this is being worked on there was no indication in the most recent Xbox Games Showcase that something was on the horizon. Guess we will just have to wait and see if these rumours turn out to be true!
That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
