In one of the biggest upsets in the world of working in games it seems the trend for mass-layoffs continue as Microsoft Xbox finally begin their full acquisition of Activision/Blizzard they announced an astonishing 1900 employee layoffs across both studios.
This is, of course, a massive blow as it heavily reduces the amount of staff available for development of new games and means a lot of already existing work has now had to be cancelled, including a long-awaited survival game from Activision/Blizzard. The biggest cost here however is of course the livelihoods of all these people that now are faced with having to find new positions in the industry.
It unfortunately continues the trend of attempting to mimic constant growth in the industry by cutting corners and staff whenever possible to simulate the idea that money keeps going up and up. As despite these layoffs, Microsoft has had record profits in recent years. I guess this is the unfortunate state of the gaming industry for the next wee while, I just hope these people find new jobs soon where they are truly appreciated.
That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
