Square Enix Montréal Shuts Down

And this one now goes down

In an interesting turn of events it would seem that The Embracer Group, the large congolmerate that is currently buying up multiple game studios, has made a big move with one of their recent acquisitions, Square Enix Montréal, as it has made the decision to shut down the studio.

The company in question was more focused on the mobile game side of popular Square Enix titles including Hitman and Lara Croft and Deus Ex. The Embracer Group have stated that they want to focus their efforts on console and PC game markets and as such have decided to close down this studio due to their sole focus on mobile games. It’s an interesting choice as while I have no interest in the mobile gaming market choosing to buy a popular studio only to close them down shortly afterwards seems like an odd decision, especially when there is so much profit to be made in the mobile gaming sector.

Luckily they have also stated that most employees have been assigned to other companies under their umbrella with special attention going to Eidos-Montréal which is rumoured to currently be working on a new Deus Ex game which makes sense I suppose. Still it is sad to see a company go under but hopefully the employees underneath can find additional work within the other companies inside this conglomerate and hopefully get to work on some big AAA titles to flex their gaming creative skills!

That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
