It seems as though Sony was not particularly happy with Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Activision/Blizzard and as such have decided to announce their latest power play, that they have purchased Bungie for $3.6 Billion.
Now to be fair Playstation has been obtaining smaller studios for a while by now as many other studios have decided to come under their wing but this has to be their biggest gain as of current. Bungie have claimed that they will still retain their autonomy and their ability to make their games multiplatform despite their now clear bias towards the Playstation but whether or not that will still be the case years down the line remains to be seen.
It’s funny as this is almost comical in how Bungie have handled their status as a studio. They started independent, were brought under Microsoft’s boot, then went independent, then joined Activision, left them, and now they are under Sony. It all just screams to me that they have an Indie Game Development Studio mindset but they want to get the funding from AAA companies. Unfortunately it doesn’t work like that, you sacrifice freedom of expression and creativity for help in funds and marketing by directly joining a publisher. How this will affect the Destiny playerbase and future projects remains to be seen but I for one will be very interested in seeing how this plays out. The creators of Halo now working for Playstation… I never thought I’d see the day.
That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
