It seems as though the trend of games that only wish to cause you pain and suffering getting popular continues with Twitch’s newest obsession, a wee game known as ‘Only Up!’. This is a third-person platforming game in which the goal is, as you may expect, travelling upwards into the sky on floating platforms and bits of scenery to reach the top. Even more strangely, you can only do it in one session, meaning if you quit then it’s back to the start for you.
When you hear the pitch for this game you are most likely picturing ‘Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy’ but in a 3D space, and you’d be mostly right. It has that same frustrating aspect of falling causing you to lose a lot of progress, simple game mechanics and at least an attempt to be ‘deep’ in dialogue, though due to the language barrier the translation just seems to come off as akward and stiff. It is also linked to a prominent NFT group so… that’s something. Still most likely the only reason this is popular on streaming platforms is because it’s another way to see your favourite personalities get angry at losing progress. It seems the human obsession with schadenfreude never changes…
That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
