It’s been a funny few days for Steam as it was recently updated with new rules for games that are listed on the storefront, this time with a hard ban on providing links on the store pages. The idea behind this is to prevent cross-promotion of other games by linking them on existing store pages, theoretically preventing further confusion on users that want to only play the game listen on the store page.
It also works to prevent the label of ‘Prologue’ games which are just game demos that disguise themselves by making them seem like a new title. It surprises me that these are tactics that people actually use to try and promote their games, but I suppose in such a cut-throat market you need to use whatever tactics you think are acceptable. Some developers have pointed out that this actually causes issues with indie developers that try to link to forums or specific other titles from their library that people might like, but I suppose Valve knows best if this is enough of a problem on their storefront so we will see if this ends up being a net positive in the long run. I for one will just look at the pretty pictures on the game steam page and buy, am simple man.
That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
