Gaming as an art form and a way to express yourself has never been in a better place. With so many ways to finance your project, methods to make your way as a solo developer and plenty of opportunities for exposure to your project it’s great to know that gaming as a medium can still at times be all about the games and not just making profit.
The most incredible examples of this is of course the many different free fully playable games available to download and play online. These aren’t just your simple flash games or browser-based mini experiences, oh no, these are fully playable games that have just as much if not more work put into them than many titles that you pay full price for. Examples that I can give here include Enderal, a fully playable new title in the Skyrim engine that is available on Steam and recently I tried out Hyrule Conquest, a modded full conversion of another fullly free RTS game known as 0 A.D. that creates a fully functioning Zelda strategy game which is something I always wanted in my life.
These are of course just a few examples of great games you can get completely for free and some of them are even capable of matching up to the big titles that AAA companies produce in droves. It’s nice to see that at the end of the day some creators care more about creating a fun and engaging product than lining their pockets and through this generous show of love for the industry it’s important that we still support the creators by sharing their work or even financially supporting them, we need more great stuff like this in our little world.
That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
