I decided recently to play through the game ‘Warhammer 40K Space Marine’ as it was already somehow on my Steam list and I knew there was a sequel coming out. I had a fun time, though it wasn’t really anything special, a slightly worse version of Halo and Gears of War combined. However, something that it managed to evoke in me was a sense of nostalgia, specifically for games from the Xbox 360/PS3 era.
Now that makes sense, that IS the time this game came out. But what I specifically mean is games that were made to be big budget experiences, pretty short, kind of generic but ultimately a bit of harmless fun. Most importantly however, they were purely single player experiences (though maybe including a multiplayer mode or two) that didn’t have any microtransactions and were just a self contained story that you played, finished, and didn’t deal with again. No live-service bullshit, no constant updates to add new content, just a one and done experience. I miss those days, and very little games nowadays follow this model. Maybe it’s because it isn’t sustainable anymore, maybe people just got greedy, who knows. All I know is that, for one day, I was brought back to the good old days of gaming, and I miss it.
So my question to all of you is what games likes this do you most fondly remember? Games that weren’t anything ground-breaking, but were just good old fashioned play once, have fun, and finish it. Let me know in the comments! That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
