Waking in the Homeland

Now THIS is an aggressively Scottish workplace canteen

I recently discovered the existence of a game that intrigues me greatly, ‘Still Wakes the Deep’ which is a narrative-focused horror game from the same developers as ‘Dear Esther’ and ‘Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs’. So there’s some pedigree behind this experience which is good, but that’s not the main reason I’m interested. The actual main reason is that it’s set on an oil rig off the North-East of Scotland in the 70’s, that’s where I live! (Obviously I’m not from the 70’s though).

As a result of this setting from looking at footage of the game it’s incredibly warm and familiar looking to me, seeing things that I can tell are old Scottish items means the developers, The Chinese Room, really did their homework. I have family members that are involved in the oil industry today, it’s something of a fact of life in this part of the world, and so this setting in particular is a hugely interesting one for me. Even more intriguingly, I won’t be playing this myself, but will actually be playing it with friends at a later date, I don’t do this! It’s because this is such a unique experience, being able to play a game set where I live, that we are taking extra care to try this out. Regardless, I have heard it’s also a good game, so I’m looking forward to this experience. If you want to check out this unique setting, check out its Steam page right here.

That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
