I am fairly unique among gamers as I have a vested interest in subjects that regard history or at least historical events as a backdrop to the gameplay, such as RPG’s like Skyrim. One thing that always comes up however is the balance between having a realistic kind of game, especially when it comes to weapons and combat, and having a game that is fun and enjoyable.
Let’s face it, while most noble knights that defeat enemies with their trusty sword sounds nice in reality swords were actually not that useful due to plate armor essentially rendering them useless. If someone was wearing plate, you weren’t getting through to them with a sword. Also don’t even get me started on Warhammers. While they look cool and all with their massive head, real ones were actually kind of small and acted more as precise oversized can-openers rather than smashing tools.
Needless to say I know a fair bit about these things, however it doesn’t take away any of the fun and enjoyment I get from these games. I still love the classic sword and shield knight even though it might not be that effective in reality and I especially love the massive hammers given to us in fantasy games. Anyway what I was most interested in was what you all thought about this issue. When it comes to ‘medieval’ style games do you care more about how things look or how they function compared to reality? Be sure to let us all know your thoughts and opinions! That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
