Replayability

I wonder how many times I could play Portal…

Thanks to a recent project I have been working on I appreciate the idea of a short, replayable game a lot more. Games like Portal don’t rely on their length to be memorable as they are incredibly short games however some instead rely upon the idea of playing the same scenarios over and over to achieve different results.

A prime example of this are games like Darkest Dungeons or FTL which instead of relying upon an singular narrative allow you to create your own in order to make it more memorable. You’re still playing the same scenarios however the RNG make it so that each encounter or death is memorable. It’s an interesting framework for a game as you rely upon the player to make up their own story, to varying degrees of success.

I personally love this type of gaming but I wondered what you all think. Do you think a short game being replayable is important or would you rather a short game tell a short story and leave it at that? Be sure to let me know! That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
