The Undeath of 4Chan

The board will never die!

If you aren’t aare of what 4Chan is, then you are hiding under a particularly good rock, often called the origin point of internet culture 4Chan has been a staple of not just gaming culture, but internet culture as a whole over the years. Nowadays it’s home to more political-focused discussions and less memes, but it’s still an important cultural site for internet historians.

Shockingly, it was almost completely taken offline recently. Following a data leak that stemmed from certain security flaws caused by a lack of updating the site many users had their identities revealed and it as believed that this may be the death knell for the site as a whole. Lucky for them though, the site admins were able to get the image board back online, with a few cut features for security purposes, so /b and all your favourite forums are back online and able to be read again. It does bring up the question though of how long 4Chan has left on this very different internet. 4Chan represents a very old-internet way of dealing with content, and with increasing pressures on internet providers for censorship and protecting children on the internet 4Chan sticks out as a big middle finger to the changing times. Will it still be around in 10 years? Who knows, but all I know is that I am at least glad the site didn’t simply disappear due to a random security breach, that would have been a very anti-climactic end to a tech and culture giant.

That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
