As a fan of all content liminal space-adjacent I quite enjoyed the creation of The Exit 8, a small indie game from a couple years ago that saw you playing a horrifying mix of liminal walking simulator and spot the difference. The goal is to traverse the same japanese subway hallway over and over looking for any strange anomalies in the environment, and if found, you must turn back and try again, otherwise you’ll end up back at the start of the loop. As the name implies, you need to successfully walk through the corridor 8 times to reach Exit 8 and finally leave this place.
It was a small and appropriately creepy indie game, excellent example of liminal horror done right, and shockingly they are actually making a movie about it as seen by the trailer above. The movie is set to come out in August and apparently will try to add a bit more of a story onto the concept and really focus in on the character traversing this strange environment. I must say, The Exit 8 being the next game to get a film adaptation was not on my bingo card, but I’m really glad some directors can see the simple genius in a concept such as this and want to bring it to a wider audience. I really don’t know how they will pull off a full film with this concept, as like I said, it’s essentially just horror-adjacent spot the difference, but I’ll certainly be checking it out when it’s ready!
That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
