Nexus Mods is the biggest website for storing and sharing mods for many different games, from Bethesda titles to Stardew Valley, you’ll be certain there’s a mod for any sufficiently popular game on there. Recently however they’ve stated about making big changes to how adult-focused mods are seen and downloaded from their site, and it doesn’t look good.
Basically, you’ll need to verify your age to download adult-mods on the site soon, in order to comply with child protection laws, and this won’t be just a “Click here if you’re over 18” button, this will be something a lot more involved, possibly requiring official ID to confirm. Now I don’t use adult mods, but for those that do I can absolutely see this as a huge invasion of privacy all at the cost of trying to protect kids who will just find an easy workaround anyway. I certainly wouldn’t want my official government-issued ID tethering me to what kids of mods for games I want to download, so for someone who maybe enjoys more NSFW mods this is even more of a problem. Nexus Mods haven’t said yet what form these new checks will be in, but I can bet this will end up in a massive uproar. We will just have to wait and see what they decide to go with, Skyrim mods will never be the same again…
