So here’s a funny story that happened over the past few days. So Itch.io, one of the premier places to download Indie games online, was for a wee while taken offline and nobody was quite sure why. As it turns out however, it was brute-force taken down due to Phishing allegations. You might be wondering how on earth that works, and it turns out that it shouldn’t, it was an out of control bot owned by the Funko Pop company, I’m not making this up.
Turns out there was a small indie game on the site that was a fan-game centered around Funko Pops, which even linked to their official page. However, because of this link, a ‘brand protection’ algorithm bot under their use detected it and immediately thought the game, and thus the domain, was a scam. So it immediately mass-reported the site to their domain-holders as a scam site, and the domain holders took the site down without even bothering to check. It came back online a day later after all had been resolved, but it’s all a bit of incompetence and really shows how foolish it is to let a random AI software run rampant online without any oversight, though hopefully this will be a good wake-up call for all companies involved.
That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
