Musical Numbers

A lil’ ditty

One of the ways in which video games tend to make themselves more enjoyable as a story-focused experience is when they experiment with the genre/tone of what you’re playing. When a game suddenly shifts into a horror experience, like in Halo or Half Life it can be an incredibly memorable instance. For me however, the best moments are when a game becomes musical in some way, either through becoming a musical briefly, or introducing musical mechanics, or just letting you jam away at a guitar for a wee while.

Now I say this as a bold faced fan of musicals in general, there’s something about a bombastic and high energy performance that brings a smile to my face, but more importantly it allows a game, and the developers, a chance to show off how creative they can be. Mor eimportantly they generally are just a fun interlude that spices up the gameplay or story. Think things like Deltarune’s Chapter 3, the end of New Donk City in Super Mario Odyssey or pretty much any boss fight in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Good music is the perfect spice to improve any game, and a game that focuses on good music for a section will always recieve good marks in my book.

What are some musical sequences that you enjoyed in games? Let us know in the comments! That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
