Two of my favourite genres of fiction are that of Fantasy and Sci-Fi, primarily because they are so different from our standard reality that it allows me not only to enjoy them as good settings but also allow myself to be immersed in being part of a completely different universe. Interestingly though I often see the two genres merging to make weird and unique settings that really push the idea of a fictional world to its extreme.
Usually this comes in the form of the genre of ‘Science Fantasy’ which works to incorporate the two different types of worlds into a single, cohesive setting but I find more interest in ones that have elements of both things. Things like having ancient, alien tech found in a fantasy world or seeing a power armor-knight in a Sci-fi story. Of course the immediate thing that pops out to me is Warhammer seeing both of the main settings for that like to criss-cross their themes and factions, with some such as the demons even being the exact same group across both time periods. It can be great fun to see an author trying to adapt a typical fantasy race, such as elves, into a space setting and seeing exactly what creative liberties need to be made in order for them to work.
I’m more interested however in the examples you can give. Please share them below, I’d love to know what else I should check out. That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
