For those reading this that may be of an older generation like me you may remember desktop pets, they were a cute wee addition for older desktop backgrounds that acted as a way to keep your screen from needing to refresh, and of course were just a fun thing to have to keep you distracted. They were little sprite programs that walked around your desktop background as if it was a physical space, sometimes the more sophisticated ones even interacted with icons, browsers and more. I remember one I used to have back in the day that even had a physics system attached to it, allowing you to toss it around or let it grab onto things while you dragged them. It was all good fun, and in the age of simplification and standardised computing systems it’s a sad thing to see such a silly but endearing system no longer being widespread. There are of course plenty of modern examples, especially on Steam, but they are certainly a niche thing now, and sometimes I just want to see a little goober walk around my screen again.
What are your thoughts on Desktop Pets? Did you like them, or did you never use them? Let us know in the comments. That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
