Big Release, Big Impact

Probably the face of indie devs releasing on that fateful day

With the shadow-drop of the new Oblivion Remaster everyone got to enjoy a fun romp back through an older Elder Scrolls game and they didn’t even have to properly wait for it, so many praised this sudden reveal and drop (leaks notwithstanding).

However, an unexpected downside of doing something like this actually came to mind while I was reading some articles that had comments from indie devs who, unfortunately, shared the release date of the shadow-drop of Oblivion Remastered. Now, despite what many of you may think, an indie game generally fails to achieve commercial success unless it sells well in the first release window of when the game comes out, hoping to catch viral success, so when a big game like this suddenly comes out from nowhere, if you happen to share the same release date, it’s unfortunately unlikely that your game will actually do well. Indeed, many indie devs felt a large proportion of their game’s failures was due to the Oblivion release, and while Bethesda obviously wouldn’t do something like this maliciously, it’s a sad side effect of not having a release date that is known in advance. Maybe they should start including their ‘leaks’ with dates next time? Wishful thinking. Either way, this was just to highlight the sad reality that sometimes, even when we get something really cool like suddenly receiving a revitalised Elder Scrolls game, some other still unfortunately suffer from this.

That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
