Dreamcore

My favourite kind of image, pure peace and serenity

As many of you will know I am a huge fan of liminal spaces, artistic representations of surreal environments that mix nostalgia, horror and a strange form of serenity. These types of things fascinate me, and a great proponent of which is the aesthetic style of Dreamcore.

Dreamcore, demonstrated by examples like the image above, is the representation of environments and places that seem as though they were plucked out from dreams. Nonsensical, peaceful, sometimes even terrifying. These mix well with things like liminal spaces and many images and songs tend to mix the two genres to make stuff that is truly fascinating. It’s been done in games many times before too, with some more recent games even taking the direct genre of Dreamcore to make entire experiences, horror or not, and represent them in a way that just lets you wander around and… explore. I love these types of things, especially in games that aren’t designed intentionally around this such as some places in Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time.

So my question today is, do any of you have excellent examples of this aesthetic in games, and if so which is your favourite? Let us know in the comments. That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
