Good news to everyone who loves the Half Life series but don’t have a VR headset available to play the latest entry, work has already begun on getting Alyx working with normal mouse and keyboard controls so VR is not required!
There are some basic mods that have enabled the ability to play the game outside VR already but, as expected, most of them are pretty experimental. One of them let’s you manually move your first person hands but as expected is riddled with bugs. Another let’s you move around and pick up objects normally just like in Half Life 2 however it takes away your hands which, obviously, makes most forms of progression impossible. Still all of this is a good sign that the community want everyone to be able to play this game and I hope they eventually crack the code in getting it to run fully without VR, although I feel a large chunk of the magic will be lost without it.
