Swords in gaming are usually a very mixed bag when it comes to realism and usability. There are so many fantasy games, historical games and even sci-fi games that use this type of weapon and the designs and functions of them vary wildly. In some games they are the backbone to your arsenal while in others they are simply a novelty to be used by certain types of players.
One thing that is almost always consistent however is how ridiculous they are. All of the anime inspired swords, a lot from fantasy role playing games and even some from the historically accurate games are not like real life swords and would be almost unusable in actual combat. However does this really matter? After all it’s not us who is actually using the weapon so in this world the very way that swords are utilised could be vastly different according to history. We as humans in this world only have our own history to compare it to and so a lot of different ideas for combat and technique shown in other game worlds proves to be ridiculous to us when we compare them.
