Seasonal Events

Ho ho ho! Merry... wait a second...
Ho ho ho! Merry… wait a second…

With the release of the Overwatch Halloween event yesterday and the announcement recently from Zenimax Online about the Elder Scrolls Online’s Spooky events I was reminded of the concept of seasonal events and the impact they have on multiplayer communities.

The first seasonal event I remember encountering was one of TF2’s Smissmass events. I absolutely loved the atmosphere, the new items and people generally messing about with the new stuff to make it feel as though it was its own personal event rather than just a bunch of people celebrating christmas. I don’t know if that type of magic can even return however the Overwatch event has sure come close as I absolutely adore some of the new items that have been added (that Reinhardt skin though, oh my god!) and the new game mode which actually adds something new and extensive to the Overwatch environment.

Not every game is going to be able to completely change up the formula for different holidays throughout the year however they certainly bring some welcome change to the times in which we need to feel a bit of festive cheer, or festive creeps! So what are your opinions on Seasonal Events in multiplayer games. Do you like them or do you find them a bit tacky? Be sure to comment and let me know! That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
