The Nintendo Source Code Leak

L is Real!

It seems that recently the gaming world has had a massive event take place but the actual events taking place are only relevant to super-nerds like myself, truly gaming at it’s finest.

During the past wee while an anonymous leaker on 4chan released over 2 terrabytes of source code, internal communications and development tools for old Nintendo titles from the SNES and N54 era. These include the source code for things like Star Fox, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and loads more. All of this information suddenly being leaked is a godsend to people who like to delve into the code of these games and is sure to bring about a whole slew of new information and experimentation in regards to these games.

This includes stuff such as people figuring out that Luigi was initially supposed to be playable in Super Mario 64 and modders have already taken the beta model and inserted it into the game, so looks like those rumours were real after all! This is going to be a massive step for people who like to make ROM Hacks of these classic Nintendo games as they now literally have the development tools used in the initial creation of these classics. My guess is that a disgruntled employee or someone wanting to cause an information leak was responsible for all of this but I don’t view it as a bad thing. These games are already so old that Nintendo isn’t making much money from them anymore and as such all of this information and development insights are just a way to preserve gaming history and help advance the modding scene which is always good in my book.

That’s all for now, and as always. It’s not just a game, It’s a Life.
